You don’t need any level of technical knowledge to get started with the electronics product design process. We take care of technical aspects including electronic design automation (EDA) for the PCB(A) and related aspects. You only have to clearly define the functionality and product concept. Usually, it’s sufficient for us to do all design implementation from there. Another good way to start with electronics design and manufacturing is to send us a reference product along with detailed instructions of the aspects that should be changed. The first milestone is that you approve the concept design and technical design files. These normally include the PCB board specifications (Gerber files) and the enclosure design (CAD files). How to Design Your Electronics (& More if Needed)

1. Define Your Concept

You should always start out with a clearly defined concept. There is not step in the entire electronics design and development process that can save you as much time and cost. All following steps will be easier and require less revisions if basics aspects such as the full functionality, dimensions, parts and materials are clear from the beginning.

2. Arrange the 3D Files

The basis for the enclosure and hardware design are the CAD or 3D files. These define all dimensions exactly and can also be used for making the case (with injection molding e.g.). Also, the sizes and planning for the circuit board design depend on the CAD files since the internal components have to be fitted to the external limits.

3. Design the Printed Circuit Board (PCB)

Together with the external design files also the internal PCB files have to be planned. The PCB is at the heart of any electronics design. Make sure that your PCB will work seamlessly based on professional Gerber files and flashing. We create the custom PCB board design already under mass production aspects and debug any issues it might have.

4. Get a Product Prototype

We can do the prototype just for your PCB or for the entire electronics product design, depending on your needs. It’s important that you test, revise and approve the full functionality for the electronics parts before any further steps. We usually 3D print the enclosure and arrange all other parts and components so that you receive a sample that is as final as possible.

5. Confirm the Bill of Materials (BOM)

An often-overlooked aspect of the electronics design is the concrete and exhaustive bill of materials. Only this way you have a reliable production cost estimate and can approach product costing confidently. It’s crucial that are parts are chosen deliberately and optimized for price and value. Packaging and other aspects can be planned as well here.

6. Arrange Production with Quality Control

As the last step, the mass production can be arranged right away if you want. This can either be just the PCB parts or the entire product. We will set up a production line at our factory and carefully check everything from incoming materials, to the production steps and eventually the outgoing final product. The delivery and logistics can also easily be arranged.

Exactly! We can either do the design for the entire electronics product or just the PCB bord design for your existing product or production line. Especially larger clients have ongoing production lines where they often just want to update an existing device and they do the assembly at their own facilities. In those cases, we usually ask you to send us your current product (or maybe even PCB prototype if the design was already tested) so that we can check it. For many smaller consumer electronics designs on the other hand, we usually create the entire product. These smaller devices usually require some form of simple enclosure that can simply be injection molded and assembly is also easy. In those cases, it is usually more economical to do the design and production phase all together. Please simply contact us and we can go over your individual needs.

No, all our electronics design services are arranged in packages step by step. You can simply do one step with us, and we hope that we can convince you with our work to continue. However, there is absolutely no obligation to do so. Some clients also simply develop the electronics designs themselves, so that we just review and arrange production since they can send us an exact prototype. At the same time, we have large clients that create a variety of electronics product designs with us and then only pick one for mass production with us as the printed circuit board manufacturer. Especially for circuit board designs for existing products, it is more common for us to start with directly with the sampling since the requirements and concept are usually already determined here. We naturally understand if you want to test our electronics design services first, so it’s absolutely no problem to just start with a simple concept and prototype first.

All the electronics/PCB designs you make with us are entirely your intellectual property. Furthermore, all ideas and design files you send to us for the electronics product design and development are treated confidentially and only for the coordination of your project. We usually start any project by signing a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that we prepare. You can of course also send your own company’s NDA or other type of confidentiality agreement (CA), so that we have a good basis to work on. We share all electronic design automation (EDA) related files, such as Gerber PCB files or CAD files, with you so that you can use them for any proof of design ownership and can take the original files wherever you want. We are a pure  electronics design and production company that has never and will never produce any products for itself. Intrepid Sourcing is a sole OEM production company with associated services.

Of course! Our goal is to establish a long-term partnership and we always work towards also doing the mass production together. However, if you shouldn’t be happy with our electronics design services, you can always take the electronics design files made with us elsewhere. There are advantages when doing not only the concept and design together but also the electronics manufacturing. You can also simply send us your design files when you already have them. There is no need to do any other phase and we can simply review. This might be relevant if you have worked with a different electronics design consultant before.

Sure! We definitely don’t have to start from scratch. In case that you want to update an existing product, we can also straight go to the product development based on the current electronics product design with the necessary changes. Concept and other preparations are not necessary then. If you want to get a prototype made or start production right away, it’s important that your electronics/PCB design files follow industry standards. We are very flexible with file formats and software used, but everything has to defined and covered.
