Knowing how to start an activewear business is mostly about understanding that the product is harder than it looks. Activewear is a large and growing category, worth roughly US$440 billion globally and growing at around 9% a year, and the entry barrier is not design. It is fabric, fit, and finding a factory that can actually make performance garments.
1. How to Start an Activewear Business: Define the Niche
The category is crowded, so a general activewear brand competes with everyone and is chosen by no one. The brands that grew fastest defined themselves narrowly first: a specific sport, a specific body type, a specific price tier, or a specific value such as sustainability or size inclusivity.
Decide this before you design anything, because it determines fabric, fit, price, and where you sell.
2. Research Properly
Buy the competitors. Wear them, wash them fifty times, and see what fails. That is more useful than any market report for working out how to start an activewear business that beats what already exists. Note what customers complain about in reviews, because fit and durability complaints are the gaps you can fill.
3. How to Start an Activewear Business: Fabric First
This is where new brands underestimate the category. Activewear fabric is a performance synthetic, polyester or nylon with 15% to 30% elastane, and the quality of that blend determines whether a garment holds shape after fifty washes or bags out after ten.
Construction matters equally. Flatlock or bonded seams rather than conventional ones, because a seam that chafes makes the garment unwearable regardless of appearance. Squat-proof opacity in leggings is a specific test a general garment factory will not know to run.
Recycled polyester and nylon are now expected rather than premium, and in the EU are heading toward regulatory requirement.
4. Choose a Manufacturer That Specialises
A general garment factory will get activewear wrong. What you need is one with performance fabric relationships, flatlock and bonded seam machinery, and experience grading compression garments, because compression behaves non-linearly across a size range and a range graded from one fit sample will fit in the middle and fail at both ends.
Verify the same things as with any supplier: factory or trading company, comparable products made, real minimums, current social compliance audits, and willingness to accept third-party inspection.
5. How to Start an Activewear Business: Sample and Test
Expect two or three sample rounds. Test more than fit: moisture wicking, colourfastness to perspiration, dimensional stability after repeated washing, pilling resistance, and opacity under stretch. A garment that looks right and pills after ten washes generates returns you cannot afford.
Approve a pre-production sample, seal it, and reference it in the contract as the production standard. Then make the final payment conditional on passing pre-shipment inspection.
Wrapping Up
How to start an activewear business, in short: define the niche before designing, buy and destroy the competition, treat fabric and seams as the product rather than the packaging, use a factory that specialises, and test for the failures that happen after purchase rather than before.
Producing activewear with factories that specialise in it, from fabric selection and fit development through production and performance testing, is what our sportswear manufacturing service covers.
