Chinese Plastic Production: The World’s Largest, and Still Growing

China is the world's largest producer of plastic products, clocking in at staggering seven million metric tons every month, and it's growing.

Chinese plastic production is the largest in the world by a wide margin. China accounts for 34.5% of global plastics production, more than all of Europe and North America combined, and its factories turn out between six and seven million tonnes of plastic products every month (Plastics Europe, The Fast Facts 2025; Statista, 2026). Output has grown almost every year for two decades, driven by demand for consumer goods, packaging, construction materials, and, increasingly, the components that go into electric vehicles, solar panels, and electronics. China has introduced regulations to curb plastic waste and single-use items, but Chinese plastic production keeps rising, because the country makes the plastic products the rest of the world buys.

Global plastics production reached 430.9 million tonnes in 2024, up 4.1% on the year and 16.3% since 2018, and Asia produced 57% of it. Chinese plastic production alone is roughly three times Europe’s, and the gap widens every year as European production stagnates and Chinese capacity grows.

Chinese Plastic Production Saw Record Growth in 2020–21

The years 2020 and 2021 were the strongest growth period in Chinese plastic production on record. Monthly output of plastic products rose from around 6.5 million tonnes in the second half of 2020 to peaks near 8 million tonnes, driven by pandemic demand for packaging, medical products, and home goods, and by the rapid recovery of Chinese factories while competitors were still closed.

The seasonal pattern that shows in every year’s data, a surge before Chinese New Year and a dip after it, was pronounced in 2021, when January and February together passed 11 million tonnes as factories built inventory ahead of the holiday. Since then Chinese plastic production has settled at a higher plateau of six to seven million tonnes a month rather than continuing to accelerate, as domestic construction demand softened and the pandemic surge in packaging faded.

World’s Largest Producer of Plastic for Many Years

China overtook the United States as the largest plastics producer around 2010 and has extended its lead since. Its position rests on three things. It has the resin: Chinese petrochemical capacity has expanded enormously since 2015, with new naphtha crackers, propane dehydrogenation plants, and coal-to-olefins facilities that give China a feedstock route no other major producer uses at scale. It has the conversion capacity: injection molding, blow molding, extrusion, and thermoforming factories in every province, concentrated in Guangdong, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu. And it has the demand, both domestic, from the world’s largest manufacturing economy, and export, since Chinese plastic production feeds the packaging and components of most of what China ships.

Plastic products were China’s fourth-largest export category in 2025 at US$142 billion, up from seventh a decade earlier, and Chinese plastic production supplies the plastic parts inside far larger export categories, electronics, vehicles, and machinery, that do not show in the plastics figure at all.

The Future of Chinese Plastic Production

Chinese plastic production will keep growing, but its composition is changing. The government’s plastic-waste policies, including bans on single-use bags, straws, and cutlery in major cities and restrictions on non-degradable packaging, have slowed growth in commodity single-use products. Growth has moved to engineering plastics for vehicles and electronics, to recycled and bio-based resins, where China is investing heavily, and to higher-value products. Global plastics production is forecast to reach 589 million tonnes by 2050 (Statista), and China will supply the largest share of that growth.

The environmental cost of Chinese plastic production is real and acknowledged in China itself, which is why the country’s plastic policy has tightened every year since 2020. For buyers, that tightening is starting to show in supply: recycled-content grades are more available from Chinese suppliers than they were, and the largest factories now hold the certifications, ISCC PLUS, GRS, and OBP, that European and American brands require for recycled and ocean-bound plastic claims.

Wrapping Up

Chinese plastic production dominates the world market, at over a third of global output and a widening lead over every other region, and it is the reason a plastic product designed anywhere is most likely to be made in China. For a brand, that means the deepest choice of factories, resins, and processes available, and it means the country’s tightening plastic regulations and the buyer’s own market rules both have to be designed in. Choosing the right resin, the right process, and the right factory within that landscape is what Intrepid Sourcing’s plastics production package is for.
